  • Hi Paul

So 55 million people go camping in the US, that’s some figure. Does that include caravan parks and RV parks? If so do you know the number of traditional tent campers? It would be interesting to have that figure.

You have a nice clean looking site here giving plenty of great advice and information.

      Hi Bill,

Good question. Unfortunately where I got the number from doesn’t break it down any further. But the number from the National Survey on Recreation and the Environment – shows the following participation in a year:
      22.2 m went backpacking
56.3 m camped at developed sites
33.9 m camped at primitive sites

And the number that went hiking was 69.7 m

I would figure that about 1/4 to 1/3 of that number were RV camping. Backpacking, primitive sites usually aren’t accessible by RV’s.

I’ve just been reading the Outdoor Foundation 2012 American Camper Report and their number based on surveys for RV camping for those aged 18 and over is 12%. This seems low to me and I would have gone with Andy’s estimate before seeing it in the report.
